The Student Buddy programme is a volunteer-based support initiative in which PAR University students help international students integrate more easily and feel at home during their stay in Rijeka and Croatia. Buddies serve as the first point of contact for incoming students, providing practical and friendly support in everyday situations.

Through this programme, buddies assist international students in:

  • settling in and navigating public transport,
  • discovering important campus locations (e.g., library, student services),
  • gaining basic information about local amenities, restaurants, and entertainment,
  • learning a few basic phrases in the Croatian language,
  • understanding cultural customs and everyday life in Rijeka.

The role of a Student Buddy requires openness, flexibility, and strong listening skills, as each international student has unique needs and expectations. Buddies provide tailored support and guidance, ensuring a smooth transition into a new environment. The programme promotes intercultural exchange, enhances communication skills, and helps build lasting international friendships. Participation in the Student Buddy programme also offers numerous benefits for local students:

  • getting to know new cultures and perspectives,
  • improving English (and other languages) skills,
  • developing intercultural competencies,
  • opportunities for volunteering and personal initiative,
  • building long-term international connections and friendships.

Students who wish to become buddies can apply via email: international@par.hr.
